Japan Society to Present Awaji Puppet Theater Company

The Japan Society will present Awaji Puppet Theater Company in the New York engagement of its seven city North American tour, March 5-7.

The company is often referenced as the origin of bunraku puppetry, and will exhibit the technique of three-man manipulation of puppets that has been handed down over 500 years. It will present a two part program, showcasing both the intricate ritual dances in the company’s repertoire and classical dramatic pieces.

Performers will includee Bando Sentaro (president, Awaji Theater Company, puppeteer), Takemoto Tomosho (chanter), Takemoto Tomowaka (chanter), Tsuruzawa Tomoshige (shamisen), Tsuruzawa Tomoya (shamisen), Yoshida Shinkuro (puppeteer), Yoshida Shiko (puppeteer), Yoshida Hironosuke (puppeteer), Yoshida Tokuzo (puppeteer), Yoshida Kotaro (puppeteer), Yoshida Koji (puppeteer), and Matsuyama Mitsuyo (stagehand).
