New York City Opera to Present New Production of Ragtime in 2008

New York City Opera will present a new production of the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime, by Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, with performances scheduled to begin on April 8, 2008. As on Broadway, it will be directed by Frank Galati, with choreography by Graciela Daniele. David Loud, the show’s original musical director, will conduct the production. Casting will be announced at a later date.

NYCO’s 2007-2008 season will begin on September 11 with a new production of Margaret Garner, with music by Richard Danielpour and a libretto by Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison. It will be directed by Tazewell Thompson and star Gregg Baker and Tracie Luck, both of whom are making their NYCO debuts.

Among the other artists making their NYCO debuts this season will be soprano Ruth Anne Swenson in the title role Handel’s Agrippina and French soprano Cassandre Berthon in the title role of Cendrillon.

Other highlights of the season will include new productions of Vanessa, with music by Samuel Barber and a libretto by the late Gian Carlo Menotti, directed by Michael Kahn and featuring Lauren Flanigan in the title role; and Henry Purcell and John Dryden’s King Arthur, directed and choreographed by Mark Morris and featuring costumes by Isaac Mizrahi.
