The Mint Theater has been awarded the 2007 Tony Randall Grant of $100,000 by The Tony Randall Theatrical Fund for its upcoming production of Leo Tolstoy’s 1886 tragedy The Power of Darkness.

First produced in New York in 1920, the play deals with a group of peasants steeped in poverty and utter darkness. “It is absolutely the type of play that Tony yearned to bring back on the stage for today’s theatergoers,” says Heather Randall, the late actor’s widow. “He always felt a special bond with the work of The Theatre Guild, which produced the play in 1920 and of which the Mint has undertaken a three-year-initiative celebrating the renowned company’s important work.”

Other companies that were awarded Tony Randall Grants include Red Bull Theatre, which received $10,000 for its upcoming production of Marlowe’s Edward the Second, and Gorilla Repertory Company and Target Margin Theater, each of which received $2,500. More than 45 companies applied for the grants.

This year’s selection committee included Jed Bernstein, Steve Buscemi, Charles Busch, Michael Cerveris, Cherry Jones, Jack Klugman, Michael Mastro, Marian Seldes, Gary Springer, and Ben Vereen.
