Kenita R. Miller will take over the role of Celie in the hit musical The Color Purple on Tuesday, February 20. She will replace Jeannette I. Bayardelle, who took over the role from original star LaChanze in November.

Miller was LaChanze’s original understudy and played the role of Celie many times during the first year of its run; she also understudied the role of Nettie. Her other credits include the Off-Broadway musical Dessa Rose, the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Ragtime, and the California Music Theatre production of Once on This Island.

The Color Purple stars Alton Fitzgerald White, Elisabeth Winters-Mendes, NaTasha Yvette Williams, Chaz Lamar Shepherd, Darlesia Cearcy, and Krisha Marcano. The show celebrated its 500th performance earlier this week. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, with LaChanze winning the trophy for Best Actress in a Musical. Its national tour kicks off in Chicago in April.
