Arkin, Cumming, McDormand, et al. Win Independent Spirit Awards

Theater stars Alan Arkin, Alan Cumming, and Frances McDormand were among the winners of this year’s Independent Spirit Awards, which were presented today in Santa Monica, California.

Arkin took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his role in Little Miss Sunshine. The film also won Best Feature, Best Director and Best First Screenplay. Arkin is also nominated for the Academy Award, which will be bestowed tomorrow night.

Cumming won for being of three producers of the film Sweet Land, which was named Best First Feature. McDormand was named Best Supporting Actress for Friends with Money.

Other winners included actors Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps for Half Nelson and Jason Reitman for Best Screenplay for Thank You for Smoking.
