Frank Wood, Mary McCann, John Gallagher Jr., Jonathan Groff, and Lea Michele will head the cast of Atlantic Theater’s world premiere production of the new musical Spring Awakening, which will run May 18-July 9. The production, to be directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Mayer and to be choreographed by Bill T. Jones, will open officially on June 15.

The show will feature music by pop singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by playwright Steven Sater. Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial masterpiece The Awakening of Spring, the show boldly depicts a dozen young people and how they make their way through the thrilling, complicated, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening.

The cast will also feature Christopher Clark, Michele Cobham, Lilli Cooper, Chris Garneau, Jared Goldstein, Brian Johnson, Lauren Pritchard, Jonathan B. Wright, and Remy Zaken. The creative team will include Christine Jones (sets), Susan Hilferty (costumes), Kevin Adams (lighting), Brian Ronin (sound), and Kimberly Grigsby (musical direction).

Wood won the Tony Award for Side Man and will soon be seen in the Arena Stage production of The Rainmaker. McCann is a founding member of the Atlantic, where she most recently appeared in The Cherry Orchard. Gallagher can currently be seen on Broadway in Rabbit Hole. Groff was an ensemble member of In My Life. Michele has appeared on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof and Ragtime.
