Applause Theatre Books Will Close Its Doors on June 30; Major Discounts in Effect

Applause Theatre Books, located at 211 West 71st Street in Manhattan, will close permanently on Thursday, June 30 after 25 years in business. The store, which opened in 1980, has long been a major source of theater, film, and dance books.

Founder Glenn Young has announced that a months-long closing sale at the store will begin today, March 1, with individual sales of $20 or more earning a 20% discount. As of Friday, April 1, sales of $30 or more will earn a 30% discount. Further discounts will go into effect on Wednesday, April 20 (40% off sales of $40 or more); Sunday, May 15 (50% off sales of $50 or more); and Friday, June 10 (60% off sales of $60 or more).

“Twenty-five years is one hell of a run,” Young is quoted in a press release. “We’ve been the inspirational source for many productions on and off Broadway. We’ve handed out recommendations to thousands of actors who landed jobs with our assistance….I see nothing sad about any of it. All our bills will be paid. I intend to throw one helluva party. I want nothing to do with any story about Applause that sounds the chord of gloom and doom.”

The store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-8pm and Sunday, noon-6pm. For more information, phone 212-496-7511.
