York Theatre Announces Spring 2004 "Musicals in Mufti"

The York Theatre Company has announced the three shows that will be presented as part of its spring 2004 “Musicals in Mufti” series of staged concert performances.

The series will begin March 19-21 with the 1941 college musical Best Foot Forward, which was written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane (score) with John Cecil Holm (book). It originally starred Nancy Walker and June Allyson. Jay Binder and Michael Dansicker will be the director and musical director of the production, respectively.

The second show will be Fanny, the musical version of Marcel Pagnol’s Marius trilogy with a book by S.N. Behrman and Joshua Logan and a score by Harold Rome. The original Broadway production of the show starred Ezio Pinza, Walter Slezak, William Tabbert, and Florence Henderson. William Montel will direct and Andrew Gerle will serve as musical director for the “Mufti” production, which will run March 26-28.

Finally, April 2-4 will be the dates for Weird Romance, a science fiction love story with a score by Alan Menken (music) and David Spencer (lyrics) and a book by Spencer and Alan Brennert. The “Musicals in Mufti” production will mark the New York debut of a newly revised version of the show with two new songs; it will be directed by Sheryl Kaller, and Fred Lassen will serve as musical director.

All three shows will be presented for five performances, Friday through Sunday, at the York Theatre at St. Peter’s in Citigroup Center (619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street).
