Presented last evening to a near-sold-out house, The Broadway Musicals of 1926 was the latest entry in the “Broadway by the Year” concert series. In residence at The Town Hall, the concerts are conceived, written, and hosted by TheaterMania’s own Scott Siegel. Here are five of the stars of last night’s show in the opening number, Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies. Left to right: Eddie Korbich, Nancy Opel, Marc Kudisch, Nancy Anderson, and Bill Daugherty. (Barely visible at the piano is musical director Ross Patterson.)
The concert offered famous and not-so-famous songs from musicals that opened on Broadway in 1926. Among the highlights: Anderson and Daugherty in “Why Do I?” from Rodgers and Hart’s The Girlfriend…
…special guest star Sutton Foster, proving that she has “It” in the song of that title from the Sigmund Romberg-Otto Harbach-Oscar Hammerstein II operetta The Desert Song…
…Foster, Anderson, and Opel in a song titled “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” from (fooled ya!) Queen High, a musical by B.G. DeSylva and Lewis Gensler…
…Korbich in “The Stonewall Moskowitz March” from Rodgers and Hart’s Betsy (additional lyrics by Irving Caesar)…
…Kudisch in “Sleepyhead,” a lullaby to a dog from Rodgers and Hart’s The Garrick Gaieties…
….and Foster and Kudisch, who logged lots of stage time together in Thoroughly Modern Millie, reuniting to perform “Do, Do, Do” from the Gershwins’ Oh, Kay!
Here are three photos from the show’s after-party at Café Un Deux Trois. Among the revelers: Bill Daugherty and Nancy Opel…
…Nancy Anderson and Marc Kudisch…
…and Broadway by the Year benefector Edythe Kenner with Scott Siegel.
After a year-long run at the King Kong Room of The Supper Club, Jim Caruso’s Cast Party debuted in its new location at the Ars Nova Theater on West 54th Street last night. Here’s Caruso (right) with his longtime pal and the Cast Party’s resident pianist, Billy Stritch…
…and here are three cute members of the Ars Nova staff advertising their favorite theater website.
If you can stand it, we’ll leave you with some shots from yet another fabulous event that took place last night. Pictured here are Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, honorees of the Drama League’s 19th annual “Musical Celebration of Broadway” gala at the Pierre Hotel.
The celebrants at the Drama League event included some folks who definitely know a thing or two about Broadway musicals. Here are Brent Barrett, Karen Ziemba, and Howard McGillin…
…and here’s the one-and-only Jerry Orbach.
