Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2003 "Writers in Performance" Series Begins March 10

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) has announced that its 2003 “Writers in Performance” series will begin on March 10.

The series — now in its 33rd season — is dedicated to combining classic literature, new works (fiction and non-fiction), and the stage in innovative and provocative ways. Steve Lawson, executive director of the Williamstown Film Festival, will direct the season, his fourth for MTC. Among the writers who have been represented in the past are Eric Bogosian, T.S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Toni Morrison, and Oscar Wilde; performers in the series have included Alec Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Blythe Danner, Rosemary Harris, Frances McDormand, and Sam Shepard.

The 2003 season includes Edgar August (interweaving the works of Edgar Allan Poe and August Strindberg); I Take Your Hand In Mine, inspired by love letters between Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper; My Passage From India, with major independent filmmaker Ismail Merchant discussing his film careers in both India and America; The Interpreter, in which author Suki Kim will read excerpts from her mystery novel; Tom Fontana, television writer of Oz, Homicide, and St. Elsewhere, discussing his shift from theater to television and the truth about both media; and Fear of Flying, adapted by Lawson from Erica Jong’s 1973 book.

All of these events will be held at the Manhattan Theatre Club on Stages I or II at City Center (131 West 55th Street).
