Mike Leigh Chats with Theater Talk

By David Marcus • Dec 31, 1969 • New York City
Theater Talk on Thirteen/WNET will be interviewing celebrated British film director Mike Leigh. He will be discussing his latest film, Topsy Turvy, which received The New York Film Critics Circle Best Picture Award for 1999. The film traces Gilbert & Sullivan's arduous path in bringing The Mikado to the Victorian stage. His previous films have included Naked, Life is Sweet and Secrets and Lies, the latter winning the Cannes Film Festival's prestigious Palme D'or.

Leigh is known for his unconventional technique of filming his actors as they improvise their interpretation of the script, which is given to them orally. Along with his cinematic career, Leigh has written and directed over 20 plays. The program, hosted by Michael Riedel of The New York Post and Susan Haskins, airs Friday, February 3 at midnight.
