John Douglas Thompson to Star in Off-Broadway Premiere of Satchmo at the Waldorf

Satchmo at the Waldorf, a new play by Wall Street Journal theater critic Terry Teachout, will make its New York City debut off-Broadway on February 15 at the Westside Theatre. Directed by Gordon Edelstein, the production, which is set to open March 4, has already played sold-out runs at the Long Wharf Theatre and Shakespeare and Company.
Obie Award winner John Douglas Thompson stars in the solo show, a drama that explores the life of singer Louis Armstrong ("Satchmo") as he approaches his final set of shows at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Thompson, last seen on Broadway in A Time to Kill and widely regarded as one of the greatest classical actors in the country, plays three roles: Satchmo, his manager Joe Glaser, and fellow trumpeter Miles Davis.
The design team for Satchmo at the Waldorf includes Lee Savage (scenic design), Ilona Somogyi (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design), and John Gromada (sound design).
