Ryan Murphy's HBO film adaptation of Larry Kramer's drama The Normal Heart will have its television premiere in May on the cable network.
Directed by Murphy and featuring a screenplay by Kramer, the film stars Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, an activist determined to get New York City to recognize the onset of a mysterious illness that would later become known as AIDS.
Also featured in the film are Matt Bomer as Ned's lover Felix, Julia Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner, Taylor Kitsch as Bruce Niles, Jim Parsons as Tommy Boatwright, Alfred Molina as Ben Weeks, Joe Mantello as Mickey Marcus, Jonathan Groff as Craig, Denis O'Hare as Hiram Keebler, Stephen Spinella as Sanford, Corey Stoll as John Bower, Finn Wittrock as Albert, and BD Wong as Buzzy.
Inspired by true events in the life of playwright Kramer that led to the formation of Gay Men's Health Crisis, The Normal Heart premiered at the Public Theater in 1985 and won a 2011 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
