Sam Perwin's new play, Gay Haiku, based on the celebrated book of poetry by Joel Derfner, will debut at Dixon Place on February 6. Perwin, also an actor, writer, and singer, will direct the production.
Gay Haiku is an exploration of the absurdities of gay life in New York. It uses Derfner's verse as a launching point for a series of vignettes focusing on issues ranging from online dating and gay marriage, to Grindr, AIDS, and closeted finance guys. The cast features Jennifer Lauren Brown, Nic Cory, Trey Gerrald, Josh Hemphill, Patrick McAndrew, Eric Ulloa, and John-Michael Zeurlein.
Gay Haiku was a semi-finalist in the Strawberry One-Act Festival and also played as part of the festival's Encores Series. The Dixon Place presentation marks the premiere of the full-length version.
Perwin has performed at off-Broadway venues as well as at regional theatres all over the country. Perwin's plays have been produced in Miami, Boston, and New York. His writing has also been published in the magazine Opera News.
