Following in the footsteps of musicals Avenue Q and Million Dollar Quartet, the five-time Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Peter and the Starcatcher will transfer to off-Broadway’s New World Stages on March 18 after its run ends at Brooks Atkinson Theatre on January 20.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

Written by Tony Award nominee Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), Peter and the Starcatcher explores the life of the lonely orphan boy who becomes the legendary Peter Pan. Co-directed by Tony Award winner Roger Rees (Nicholas Nickleby) and Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), the play with music is based on the best-selling young adult novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.

The entire 2012 Tony Award-winning design team, including Donyale Werle (scenic design), Paloma Young (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), and Darron L West (sound design), will take part in the new staging. Also featured on the creative team are Steven Hoggett (movement), Wayne Barker (music), and Marco Paguia (musical direction).

Peter and the Starcatcher began performances on Broadway on March 28, 2012 and opened on April 15. Commissioned by Disney Theatrical Productions, the work premiered at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse in 2009 before making its New York debut in March, 2011, at the New York Theatre Workshop.

The current Broadway cast is led by Matthew Saldivar (The Wedding Singer) as Black Stache, Adam Chanler-Berat (Next to Normal) as Peter, and Betsy Hogg (Fiddler on the Roof) as Molly. Original cast member Christian Borle, who received a 2012 Tony Award for his performance as Black Stache, departed the company in June, 2012, to film the second season of the NBC drama Smash, in which he stars. Tony Award nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), who originated the role of Molly, left the production on December 30 to begin rehearsals for The Glass Menagerie at American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts.

New World Stages has become a haven for Broadway productions wishing to continue their runs on a more intimate scale. In addition to Avenue Q and Million Dollar Quartet, the multi-auditorium complex has housed off-Broadway versions of The 39 Steps and the 2011 revival of Rent. Current Broadway long-runner Rock of Ages originated at the venue.
