Bette’s Back on Broadway: Midler Will Return This Spring as Hollywood Super Agent Sue Mengers

Music superstar and Broadway veteran Bette Midler (The Rose) will return to the Great White Way for the first time in over thirty years this spring in Tony Award winner John Logan (Red)’s new one-woman show, I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers. Directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello (Assassins), the work will open on April 24 at The Booth Theatre. Previews start April 5.

In her lifetime, Mengers, who died in 2011, was one of Hollywood’s major players: A no nonsense, high-powered female agent in the traditionally male-dominated industry. Having climbed through the ranks from receptionist to well-known firms including William Morris and I.C.M., her client list included big names such as Barbra Streisand, Mike Nichols, Faye Dunaway, Bob Fosse, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine.

Midler made her Broadway debut in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof, and has since appeared in concerts including Bette Midler’s Clams on a Half Shell Revue and Bette! Divine Madness, which received a special Tony Award in 1974. She also served as a producer of the recent musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The recipient of three Grammys, a four Golden Globes, and three Emmys, her film credits include The Rose, Gypsy, Hocus Pocus, The First Wives Club, Beaches, and For the Boys.

Logan received the Tony for his fact-based drama, Red. He is also the author of the play Peter and Alice, and an Academy Award nominee for his screenplays Gladiator and The Aviator. His other screenplays include Star Trek: Nemesis, Rango, Coriolanus, Skyfall, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, for which he received a Golden Globe. Mantello’s many Broadway credits include: The Other Place, Other Desert Cities, Three Days of Rain, and Take Me Out, among others.
