Norbert Leo Butz to Appear on NBC’s Smash

Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz will guest star on an upcoming episode of the NBC’s musical drama Smash.


The actor filmed a scene on Monday. January 16 at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island with actress Megan Hilty, who plays Broadway star Ivy Lynn.


The series, which details the making of a Broadway musical, will begin airing on NBC on Monday, February 6, with the pilot episode now available through streaming. It is co-created and written by playwright Theresa Rebeck and has original songs by Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Tony winner Michael Mayer has directed the pilot.

The cast features Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Anjelica Huston, Katherine McPhee, Jaime Cepero, Will Chase, Jack Davenport, Raza Jaffrey, Brian d’Arcy James, and Savannah Wise, along with guest stars Nick Jonas, Bernadette Peters, Uma Thurman, Grace Gummer, and Michael Cristofer.


Butz will appear in the upcoming Second Stage Theatre revival of Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive. He won Tonys for his work in Catch Me If You Can and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. His other Broadway credits include Enron, Speed-the-Plow, Is He Dead?, Wicked, Thou Shalt Not, and Rent.
