Diane Paulus to Direct Cirque Du Soleil’s Amaluna

Diane Paulus will direct Cirque du Soleil’s newest touring production, Amaluna. The show is set to debut in Montreal on April 19, and has subsequent engagements scheduled for Quebec City and Toronto.

The piece, set on a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon, has been inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and centers on Prospera, as she directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony, and the young men who find themselves in the midst of the rite, following a storm the queen has caused.

Paulus is currently represented on Broadway with The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. Among her many other credits are the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair, the Shakespeare-inspired The Donkey Show off-Broadway, and Prometheus Bound and Johnny Baseball at American Repertory Theatre, where she is artistic director.

The creative team includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Matthew Larivée (lighting design), Mérédith Caron (costume design), and Jacques Boucher (sound design). The show’s original musical will be by Guy Dubuc and Marc Lessard (aka Bob & Bill).
