Colman Domingo and Scott Shepherd will star as Zachariah and Morris, respectively, in the Signature Theatre production of Athol Fugard’s Blood Knot. The production, which will be the first in the company’s new Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at the Signature Center, will be directed by Fugard, and run January 31-March 11, with an opening on February 16.

The play concerns two biracial South African brothers who grapple with crippling poverty and lonely isolation. One is light-skinned enough to pass for white, while the other feels imprisoned by his job at a whites-only park.

Domingo received a Tony nomination for his work in The Scottsboro Boys, with other Broadway credits including Passing Strange, Well, and Chicago. Shepard is best known for his work with Elevator Repair Service, including his starring role in the critically acclaimed Gatz.

The creative team will include Christopher H. Barreca (set), Susan Hilferty (costumes), Stephen Strawbridge (lighting), Brett Jarvis (sound) and Barbara Rubin (dialect coach).

Blood Knot is the first of three Fugard shows Signature will present this season.
