Manhattan Theatre Club’s New York premiere of Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man, which begins previews tonight at New York City Center – Stage I, has extended its run by a week, and will now close on March 20.

Doug Hughes has directed the play, which stars Andre Braugher, Andre Holland and Jay Wilkison.

Set in April, 1865, following the end of The Civil War, the play concerns a Jewish Confederate soldier (Wilkison) who has returned from battle, and two former slaves (Braugher and Holland), who were raised as Jews in his household. As the three men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost each man his freedom.

The creative team includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Jill BC DuBoff (sound design), and J. David Brimmer (fight direction).
