On Wednesday, January 19, The Public Theater and Amnesty International USA hosted a rally to show solidarity with the persecuted Belarus artists and activists, including Belarus Free Theater, following the disputed elections in Belarus. The rally was held on 67th Street and Lexington Avenue, near the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations.

Natalia Koliada, founder of Belarus Free Theater, was among the participants, and was joined by Linda Emond, Tony Kushner, Mandy Patinkin, and other members of the New York theater community at the rally.

Belarus Free Theater recently presented Vladimir Shcherban’s Being Harold Pinter as part of the Public’s Under the Radar festival. As previously reported, The Goodman Theatre will present a limited engagement of the production in February.

Being Harold Pinter juxtaposes transcripts from Belarusian political prisoners with excerpts from Harold Pinter’s plays, including The Homecoming, Ashes to Ashes, and Old Times, as well as his other writing, such as his Nobel Prize speech.
