New Finale Added to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on January 19 Stalls at Evening Performance

A new aerial finale was unveiled for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark at the show’s Wednesday January 19 matinee and evening performances, according to a report in The New York Times. The new sequence involves Peter Parker/Spider-Man, played by Reeve Carney, flying over theatergoers in the Foxwoods Theatre.

According to audience members who attended the Wednesday evening performance, the new addition to the show did not go off completely without a hitch. “There came a moment where he [Carney] just stopped and he was hanging over us. A voice came on announcing that the computers had stopped the sequence because of a ¼” variance,” one attendee told TheaterMania. “It’s one of their safety measures.” It was the second pause in the performance that the audience members experienced. The first came during the first act, and lasted, they estimated one minute.

The new ending has been added after the show postponed its opening from February 7 to March 15 in order to create a finale for the production and fine tune other sections of the show.

The show features music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of the band U2, and a book by director Julie Taymor and Glen Berger. The creative team also includes Daniel Ezralow (choreography), George Tsypin (scenic design), Eiko Ishioka (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Jonathan Deans (sound design), Kyle Cooper (projection design), Julie Taymor (mask design), Campbell Young Associates (hair design), Judy Chin (makeup design), Scott Rogers (aerial design), Jaque Paquin (aerial rigging design), David Campbell (orchestrations & arrangements), Teese Gohl (musical supervision), and Kimberly Grigsby (music director).

In addition to Carney, the show stars Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson, Patrick Page as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin, and T.V. Carpio as Arachne.
