Melissa Etheridge to Play St. Jimmy in Broadway’s American Idiot

Oscar and Grammy-winning rock star Melissa Etheridge will play a one-week-only engagement in the role of St. Jimmy in Broadway’s American Idiot, at the St. James Theatre, February 1-6.

The role is currently being portrayed by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who continues as St. Jimmy through January 30, and then returns to complete his previously reported 50-performance engagement, February 10-27.

The musical features a score by Green Day. It is directed by Michael Mayer, who wrote the book with Armstrong, and features choreography by Steven Hoggett. It follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration.

The principal cast also includes Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony Award nominee Stark Sands, Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, and Jeanna de Waal. The cast also features Declan Bennett, Jennifer Bowles, Andrew Call, Gerard Canonico, Miguel Cervantes, Van Hughes, Brian Charles Johnson, Lorin Latarro, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Leslie McDonel, Chase Peacock, Wallace Smith, Theo Stockman, Ben Thompson, Alysha Umphress, Aspen Vincent, and Libby Winters.

Etheridge has previously appeared on Broadway during a one-night special performance during the finale of the musical Million Dollar Quartet. The singer/songwriter’s latest album Fearless Love was recently released on Island Records. Her numerous hits include “Bring Me Some Water,” “Like The Way I Do,” and “Ain’t It Heavy.”
