On Monday, January 18, Manhattan School of Music paid homage to Stephen Sondheim with a special musical tribute, Beautiful Girls, created by Lonny Price and starring Zoe Caldwell, Jenn Colella, Marin Mazzie, and Donna McKechnie.

In addition, Paul Gemignani conducted the Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia and Margaret Peterson and other students from the school performed at the concert.

The evening showcased a compilation of Sondheim songs that explored a women’s journey through life reflected by his music. Among the selections were “The Miller’s Son,” “Take Me to the World,” “I Remember,” “I’m Still Here,” “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “Another Hundred People,” “Not A Day Goes By,” “Every Day a Little Death,” “So Many People,” “Getting Married Today,” Some People,” “Anyone Can Whistle,” “Pretty Women,” and “Liaisons.”

Five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury was in the audience and appeared at a post-concert reception held in the Peter Jay Sharp President’s Residence adjacent to the School. Lansbury spoke about her life’s work in musical theater and her experiences working with Sondheim; she has appeared in his musicals Anyone Can Whistle, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and the current Broadway revival of A Little Night Music.
