John Gallagher, Jr., Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Stark Sands, et al. to Star in Broadway’s American Idiot; Cast to Perform at Grammy Awards

Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr. will star in the Broadway premiere of the Green Day musical American Idiot, at the St. James Theatre beginning March 24, with an opening set for April 20. The show is co-authored and directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, with choreography by Steven Hoggett.

The musical, which is also written by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, follows a group of working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration. It features songs from both American Idiot and the group’s new album 21st Century Breakdown. The production previously played a record-breaking run at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, also starring Gallagher.

The cast will feature Stark Sands, Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, Mary Faber, and Tony Vincent. It will also feature Declan Bennett, Andrew Call, Gerard Canonico, Miguel Cervantes, Joshua Henry, Van Hughes, Brian Charles Johnson, Joshua Kobak, Lorin Latarro, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Leslie McDonel, Chase Peacock, Theo Stockman, Ben Thompson, Alysha Umphress, Aspen Vincent, and Libby Winter.

The creative team will include Tom Kitt (music supervisor, orchestrator and music arranger), Christine Jones (scenic design), Andrea Lauer (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design), Brian Ronan (sound design), and Darrel Maloney (video design).

In related news, the entire Broadway cast will perform live at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards this Sunday, January 31, singing the Grammy-nominated song “21 Guns” with Green Day. The performance will be broadcast on the CBS Television Network from 8-11:30pm (ET/PT).
