Innovative Theatre Foundation Releases Results of Off-Off-Broadway Demographic Study

By Dan Bacalzo • Jan 12, 2010 • New York City

The Innovative Theatre Foundation has released the results of its demographic study of Off-Off-Broadway practitioners, based on a survey conducted between 2007 and 2009, and inclusive of actors, directors, designers, playwrights, crew members, producers, and administrators.

Among the report's findings is that 77% of all Off-Off Broadway practitioners surveyed identify as White/Caucasian, 53% are female, and 85% have a college degree. Survey respondents primarily fell between the ages of 21-40, with 91% living in New York City. The average annual income of survey participants was $39,185.

The study represents the third installment of a five-part survey program that seeks to establish a baseline of statistical information for the Off-Off-Broadway community. Previous studies examined budgets and performance venues, while future studies are planned for audience demographics and cultural impact.
