The Los Angeles Opera has announced the selections for its 2008-2009 season, which will begin with a new production of the trilogy Il Trittico to be directed by Woody Allen and William Friedkin and designed by Santo Loquasto. It will run September 6-21.

Up next will be The Fly, a new opera based on David Cronenberg’s popular film adaptation of George Langelaan’s short story about a brilliant scientist who accidentally mutates into a hybrid of man and insect, which will make its American premiere September 7-27. The opera, to be directed by Cronenberg, will have a libretto by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang and a score by Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore.

Other offerings will include Robert Wilson’s production of Madama Butterfly (October 2-12), Sir Peter Hall’s production of Die Zauberflote (January 10-25, 2009), and Darko Tresnjak’s new production of Walter Braunfels’ The Birds (April 11-26, 2009).

Artists who will appear during the season include the company’s general director, Placido Domingo, as well as Mark Delavan, Elizabeth Futral, Nathan Gunn, Brandon Jovanovich, and Salvatore Licitra.
