Dreamgirls Tops NAACP Image Award Nominations; Bassett, Fishburne, Goldsberry, Williams Among Nominees

The hit film Dreamgirls earned eight NAACP Image Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture. The awards will be presented on Friday, March 2 and aired live on Fox Television.

Dreamgirls also earned acting nods for six of its stars, Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles (who earned four other nominations for her recording work), Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover, as well as for its soundtrack.

Disney’s popular High School Musical received nominations for Best Youth/Children’s Programming and for co-star Corbin Bleu. Jamie Foxx: Unpredictable scored a nod for Best Variety Programming.

Saana Lathan, who co-starred in the Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun, picked up two nominations, as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Nip/Tuck and Best Actress in a Motion Picture for Something New.

Other theater veterans who earned acting nominations include Angela Bassett (Akeelah and the Bee), Harry Belafonte (Bobby), Andre Braugher (Thief), Loretta Devine (Life Is Not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story), Laurence Fishburne (Akeelah and the Bee), Renee Elise Goldsberry (One Life to Live), Whoopi Goldberg (Everybody Loves Chris), Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order), James Reynolds (Days of Our Lives), Regina Taylor (The Unit), Glynn Turman (The Wire), Denzel Washington (Inside Man), Kerry Washington (The Last King of Scotland), Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty), and Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy).
