Blue Heron Arts Center Closes

The Blue Heron Arts Center (123 East 24th Street) closed its doors on December 30 after seven years, due in part to a rent increase. But the Blue Heron Theater Company, the Center’s parent, will continue to produce shows in other spaces.

Said Ardelle Striker, the company’s artistic director, who ran the center on a day-to-day basis: “Faced with a significant rent increase, I knew it was the right time in my life and the company’s life to devote our energies to just producing and no longer being a landlord. We plan to produce Blue Heron’s next show — in late spring — in another space in Manhattan. I’m also excited about the fact that there has been significant talk about a possible transfer [of our recent production] of Bartleby the Scrivener to an Off-Broadway contract.”

Among the many successful shows that played at Blue Heron were Admissions, The Loves of Shakespeare’s Women, I Love Paris, Blackbird, and Harlem Duet.
