The winner of four new play awards in 2004, Intimate Apparel is a loving and evocative portrait of an African-American woman in New York at the beginning of the 20th Century. Plain and unsophisticated, Esther creates intimate apparel for wealthy socialites--and women of ill repute. Though not exciting, her life is full, but romance continues to elude her until she begins a correspondence with a Caribbean stranger. When he finally arrives in New York, Esther must ask herself if this distant, brooding man is the same person who penned those romantic letters.
