New Jersey Ballet's spectacular Esmeralda — based on Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame — tells the tale of a poor gypsy dancer, a handsome but heartless lover, an evil archbishop, and a strange reclusive hunchback, complete with all the splendor and pageantry of medieval Paris. A rare treat not seen in the U.S. for over 50 years, the New York Times hailed this production as "a new, ambitious and smoothly sustained staging…a rare look at a full three-act Esmeralda."
Join us for an evening of dance with three different ballets, each showcasing the company's talented dancers and the different styles in which classical dance can be interpreted. Les Patineurs (The Skaters' Waltz) is a timeless a classic with choreography by Frederick Ashton and music by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Pas de Dix (Dance for Ten) is a classical ballet set to the music of Raymonda by Alexander Glazunov. Mountain Legend, with music by Aaron Copland and choreographed by Phyllis Papa, captures the flavor of life in a rural American town in the 1930s.
This two-act ballet is a lively retelling of the well-known fairy tale about a brother and sister who wander into a forest where they are captured by a witch in a fantastic gingerbread house. In a classic good-triumphs-over-evil plot, the spunky youngsters defeat the witch, free other children she had baked into gingerbread, and are reunited with their loving parents in the happily-ever-after finale. The ballet incorporates the beautiful Engelbert Humperdinck "Fourteen Angels" bedtime prayer and features New Jersey Ballet's original "storyteller" narration so even the littlest theatergoer can keep up with ease.
Cinderella is one of New Jersey Ballet's most popular children's productions. The classic fairy tale about a girl losing her slipper at the big ball gets the royal treatment with beautiful sets and costumes. New Jersey Ballet's hallmark "storyteller" narration makes sure even the littlest theatergoers can keep up with ease.
