New Jersey Repertory Company's production of The Substance of Bliss starts performances this evening.

Throughout the course of a sometimes funny and sometimes fraught evening, husband and wife Paul and Donna wait for their troubled fifteen-year-old son to return home. When he arrives, they will take him directly to a drug rehabilitation center. However, he hasn’t showed up yet, and in the meantime, the pair run the gamut of discussions from their renovation choices, to political and religious persuasions of their neighbors, to feral cats, and even to questioning their decision to marry each other and have the child that is causing them so much pain. Delving into issues of consumer culture and the essence of happiness, the play ultimately asks: It's 2am do you know who your children are?

The play was written by Tony Glazer and is directed by Evan Bergman. It features Christopher Daftsios as Paul and Susan Maris as Donna.

The creative team includes Jessica Parks (set design), Jill Nagle (lighting design), Patricia E. Doherty (costume design), Merek Royce Press (sound design), Brian Snyder (technical director), and Jennifer Tardibuono (stage manager).

Performances will run through February 14.
