Liz McCartney, Jessica Grové, Nick Adams, and the cast of Paper Mill Playhouse's upcoming production of Disney's The Little Mermaid offered the press a preview of the musical on Thursday, May 9 at the New 42nd Street Studios. Directed by Glen Casale, the Paper Mill version will be a revised interpretation of the 2008 Broadway musical, which is inspired by the 1989 animated film. It features a Tony Award-nominated score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Glenn Slater, and a book by Doug Wright.
Grové (A Little Night Music) leads the company as Ariel, the mermaid of the show's title, who dreams of a life on land and not under the sea. Adams (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) costars as Prince Eric, with McCartney (Annie) as sea witch Ursula, Edward Watts (Scandalous) as King Triton, Alan Mingo Jr. (The Little Mermaid) as Sebastian the Crab, Matt Allen (The Wedding Singer) as Scuttle, Scott Leiendecker (Fiddler on the Roof) as Flotsam, Sean Patrick Doyle (La Cage aux Folles) as Jetsam, Timothy Shew (Evita) as Chef Grimsby, Christian Probst (Beauty and the Beast) as Flounder, and Ron Wisniski (Annie) as Grimsby. The ensemble will include Kristine Bennett, Ward Billeisen, Lauryn Ciardullo, Thay Floyd, KC Fredericks, Rod Harrelson, Lisa Karlin, Nicole Javanna Johnson, Morgan Kirner, Erica Mansfield, Dennis O'Bannion, Robbie Roby, James Shackelford, Katie Ulrich, and Jessica Wockenfuss.
Featured on the creative team are John MacInnis (choreography), Craig Barna (music direction), Kenneth Foy (scenic design), Amy Clark and Mark Koss (costume design), Charlie Morrison (lighting design), Randy Hansen (resident sound design), Leah J. Loukas (hair and wig design), and Paul Rubin (flying-sequence choreography).
