Alvin, Foa, Dixon, McCartney Head Cast of Paper Mill’s Pirates!

The upcoming production of the musical Pirates! at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey will feature Farah Alvin as Mabel, Barrett Foa as Frederic, Ed Dixon as the Major General, Liz McCartney as Ruth, Gerry McIntyre as the Sergeant, and Andrew Varela as The Pirate King.

Billed as “a swashbuckling adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance,” the show was conceived by Gordon Greenberg, Nell Benjamin, and John McDaniel. Paper Mill will present Pirates! June 7-July 8 as a fully-staged theatrical concert with costumes, choreography, and sword fighting.

The show will be directed by Greenberg, with choreography by Warren Carlyle, musical direction by Shawn Gough, set design by Rob Bissinger, lighting by Jeff Croiter, costumes by David C. Woolard, and sound design by Randy Hansen. Rounding out the cast are Timothy Alex, Katie Babb, Julia Burrows, Kristin Carlson, Michael Daly, Matt Ferraro, Michael Scott Harris, Morgan James, Robyn Kramer, Michael McKinsey, John O’Creagh, Julia Osborne, Lucas Richter, Tory Ross, Michael Rossmy, Roger Preston Smith, and Daniel Spiotta.

Alvin was featured in the Off-Broadway musical I Love You Because last season. Foa’s Broadway credits include Avenue Q and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; at Paper Mill, he appeared as Mordred in Camelot. Dixon’s most recent role at Paper Mill was Max Detweiler in The Sound of Music; he has been seen on Broadway in such shows as Les Misérables and The Scarlet Pimpernel. Liz McCartney has performed on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Taboo. McIntyre’s Broadway credits include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Anything Goes, and Once on this Island. Varela has appeared on Broadway as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and as Professor Bhaer in Little Women.

Paper Mill began its current season with a $2.8 million deficit that threatened the theater’s existence. That deficit has not yet been fully erased through fundraising efforts, but local financial institutions, community leaders, and members of the theater board have put together a plan to revitalize the struggling institution.
