Less than one year after Shakespeare in the Park's elaborate rendering of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods, the McCarter Theatre Center has announced plans to take the production in the completely opposite direction.
Scheduled to run from May 3-June 2 (with an official opening night set for May 10), McCarter Theatre Center will present Fiasco Theater's minimalist reimagining of Into the Woods, consisting of only ten performers and a single piano. The ensemble will include Broadway veterans Jessie Austrian (The Importance of Being Earnest), Andy Grotelueschen (Cyrano de Bergerac), Jennifer Mudge (The Philanthropist), Ben Steinfeld (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), and Emily Young (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). Also among the cast are Paul L. Coffey, Liz Hayes, Claire Karpen, Patrick Mulryan, and Fiasco Theater founder, Noah Brody.
The production will be codirected by cast members Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld, with choreography by Lisa Shriver and musical direction/piano accompaniment by Matt Castle. The creative team also features set design by Tony Award winner Derek McLane (Anything Goes), costume design by Whitney Locher, lighting design by Tim Cryan, sound design by Darron L. West, and vocal coaching by Kathryn Armour.
