Barbara Walsh will play legendary opera star Maria Callas in the Paper Mill Playhouse’s production of Terrence McNally’s Master Class, to run March 4-April 5, with an official opening on April 8. The production will be directed by Wendy Goldberg. She replaces the previously announced Kate Mulgrew, with a press statement explaining that Mulgrew “will not be appearing in the production due to a schedule change.”

The play is set during a master class in which Callas instructs three young singers, while also recalling the story of her life, including her stormy relationship to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

The cast will also include Sarah Uriarte Berry (Sharon), Andrew Gerle (Manny), Mike McGowan (Tony), Lauren Worsham (Sophie), and Ryan King (Stagehand). The creative team will include Alexander Dodge (set), Anne Kennedy (costumes), Josh Epstein (lighting), and Randy Hansen (sound).

Walsh’s many Broadway credits include Company, Blood Brothers, Big, and Falsettos, and recently starred in Washington D.C.’s Studio Theatre production of Grey Gardens.
