WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, one of Broadway's most beloved musicals and biggest hits, is based on the true story of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widowed Royal Navy Captain, his seven children, and Maria, the young governess sent to care for the children. A postulant from the Abbey of Nonnberg, Austria, Maria is more interested in playing music than praying. Although the nuns love her, she is thought not well-suited to convent life. It is for this reason that she is assigned to this post, to have time to consider her true calling. Upon arrival, Maria brings music and love back to the lives of the children, winning the captain's heart along the way. The story continues as the von Trapp family escapes the Nazis, leaving behind their ancestral homeland and wealth, looking toward happiness in a new land. Embellishing the warm story of the von Trapps are some of the most memorable tunes in the Rodgers & Hammerstein song bag: "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss," "Do Re Mi" and the much loved title number, "The Sound of Music," among many others.
Dinner seating begins two hours before curtain.
