Gilbert and Sullivan are on a steamer bound for the New York opening of their new hit — a roaring farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, and hopeful young lovers. Unfortunately, they've left the score in London! They scramble to recreate the show with only the clothes in their trunks and shipmates for a cast. All the music you love in this hilarious steampunk operetta at sea. Gilbert and Sullivan's comedy-musical gets a fresh twist in this new production conceived and directed by Doug Scholz-Carlson.
This new production of a classic opera by Giuseppe Verdi reimagines the original's sinister tale of seduction and revenge. The disfigured jester Rigoletto struggles to keep his innocent daughter safe from the clutches of the lecherous Duke of Mantua. Brimming with rich melodies and featuring the famous aria "La donna è mobile," Rigoletto surges toward a devastating conclusion.
Note: This production is performed in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.
A devout monk seeks to convert Thaïs, a ravishingly beautiful courtesan, but realizes too late that his pious obsession is rooted in lust, not religion. Minnesota Opera produces Jules Massenet's sensual, melodic creation for the first time with Minnesota-born soprano Kelly Kaduce (Tosca) in the glamorous title role. Set in the deserts and oases of fourth-century Egypt, this searing drama explores the conflict between the passion of the flesh and the salvation of the soul.
Note: Thaïs is performed in French with English translations projected above the stage.
