Francesca Zambello to Direct Marsha Norman’s The Master Butchers Singing Club at Guthrie

Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman’s The Master Butchers Singing Club, adapted from the 2003 novel by Minnesota author Louise Erdrich, will open the Guthrie Theater‘s 2010-2011 season this September. Francesca Zambello will direct the production.

The play focuses on the lives of two families in a small town in North Dakota during the first half of the twentieth century. A full performance schedule for the production will be available when the balance of the Guthrie’s coming season is announced on May 18.

Norman won the Pulitzer for ‘night, Mother. Her other plays include Getting Out, Traveler in the Dark, Trudy Blue and Last Dance. Additionally, she wrote the books for the musicals The Color Purple and The Secret Garden, winning a Tony Award for the latter.

Zambello was recently named the incoming artistic and general director of Glimmerglass Opera and is also artistic adviser to the San Francisco Opera.In addition to her numerous opera credits, she directed the current national tour of The Little House on the Prairie, the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, and the world premiere of The First Wives Club.
