WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
La Jolla Playhouse presents The Wiz, based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Featuring music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, who won Broadway's 1975 Tony Award for Best Score, both music and lyrics for The Wiz. Book is by William F. Brown.
A "re-imagining" for the 21st century! When The Wizard of Oz met the urban beat of the 1970s, history was made to the tune of seven Tony Awards. Now the young Dorothy travels to the strange and spectacular Land of Oz once again as Playhouse Artistic Director Des McAnuff teams up with original Wiz orchestrator Harold Wheeler to create a re-imagined, multi-cultural musical phenomenon for a new century.
Performed in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

It's been over 30 years since a hip Dorothy first landed in an all-black Oz in the musical
The Wiz. Now, director Des McAnuff and his team at the La Jolla Playhouse have re-imagined the Tony Award-winning show for the new millennium with a multi-cultural cast and other modern updates. For example, Aunt Em's farmhouse here comes with a satellite TV dish, the Tinman is comprised mostly of junked computer parts, and the Lion is a bag person. But amidst all these new trappings, The Wiz has lost its heart, soul, and magic.
