WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg's Our Mother's Brief Affair, adult siblings Seth and Abby have come together to take care of their mother, Anna, who has come close to dying more than once. But this time something is different. This time Anna has a story to tell, about long-ago Saturday afternoons, about escorting young Seth to his viola lessons at Juilliard despite his constant protestations, and about what she did while he played scales -- a love affair made out of weekly matinees at a small hotel, with a man whose name is synonymous with betrayal.
Pam MacKinnon directs this world premiere.

RE:Richard Greenberg....heritage and humor
There are so many Richard Greenbergs. This play has more laughs and many of them relate to "getting" Jewish humor. AryeGross is a standout. Though the program says the play runs 90 minutes without intermission, Saturday evenings performance was 140 minutes without intermission....yet everyone stayed attentive. Interesting staging and it works surprisingly well. I felt that the Lover/Father character was less well written which impacted those characters performances.

Whether writing about Charles Van Doren and the quiz show scandals, New York Jews trying to assimilate into Orange County's more laid back lifestyle, children trying to come to grips with the legacy of their parents, or the locker rooms of professional baseball, Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg has consistently struck a chord with audiences. His latest play, Our Mother's Brief Affair, getting its world premiere at South Coast Repertory, is one of his simplest and best efforts yet.
