WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Stage and screen actress Lynn Redgrave performs her lyrical new work Nightingale, which was inspired by her maternal grandmother, Beatrice Kempson, who died in the 1960s. While visiting her grave in England a few years ago, Redgrave found with much dismay that the headstone had been erased by acid rain. Redgrave wondered who would remember her chilly, not very lovable grandmother, one of the lesser-known members of her famous family. Nightingale's story focuses on tantalizing fragments of stories passed down from her mother. The narrative completes a portrait of a woman caught in a loveless marriage during the rigid Edwardian time in which she lived.

How do you remember someone you scarcely knew? How is immortality achieved for a woman who lived more in shadows than in spotlights, who lacked the confidence and self-awareness that would later blossom in her children and grandchildren, who grew distant and sour from accumulated decades of jealousies, losses and regrets? When award-winning actress Lynn Redgrave went looking for her grandmother's grave, she found the spot where the woman was buried -- but the headstone was blank. Over the years, acid rain had washed away the carved words until only smooth stone remained.
The experience prompted Redgrave to consider how history and time will recall those whose passing is marked only by the [...]
