WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The year is 1959, and in a French military hospital, Gustave, Philippe, and Henri are hatching a plan to escape. The bickering trio -- World War I vets and long-term residents of this hospital -- live in a world unpunctured by passing time. Henri has a shrapnel wound in the leg. A head injury has left Philippe prone to fainting spells. And, though Gustave appears to be fine, the thought of leaving the hospital clearly terrifies him. So the men spend their days taunting the nuns who look after them and spinning the dream of their impossible exodus.
Heroes, by Gérald Sibleyras, is adapted and translated by Tom Stoppard. This is the production's American premiere.

It is the late summer/early autumn of 1959, and three veterans of World War I pass away the hours, the days, and the rest of their lives at a military retirement home in the French countryside. "Pass away" is an appropriate pun, considering that these three men, who have survived the death and destruction of a terrible war, now joke about their impending mortality and that of their comrades in the nun-run facility that is now their home.
There's not a whole lot more beyond weak jokes and a Godot-like sense of waiting in Gérald Sibleyras' rather tepid relationship comedy, Heroes, adapted by Tom Stoppard. The play is now receiving its American premiere at the Geffen Playhouse[...]
