Synopsis

The orginal version of Shakespeare's most popular comedy took place in Ancient Greece, and featured nobles, a royal wedding, craftsmen commoners who aspired to be thespians, fairy folk casting mystical spells, a character literally becoming something of a jackass, people falling in love with the wrong people, and true lovers ultimately being reunited. Anthony Barnao directs this version of the Bard's classic play; set in contemporary LA (Bel Air, Hollywood, Compton) with original music.

Director/adaptor Anthony Barnao has opted to take a fresh approach to the classic material: "This is Blue Sphere Alliance's first production in a series entitled 'Shakespeare in the Parking Lot' being presented at the Avery Schreiber Theatre. The concept for this production is that it happens in present day Los Angeles. The Athens residents (Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius) are all from Bel Air. The Mechanicals (Bottom the waiter, Quince the barber, Snug the nun, Snout the gaffer, Flute the car mechanic, and Starveling the personal trainer) are all from Hollywood-- not glamorous Hollywood, but working-class Hollywood. Our fairies (Oberon, Titania, Puck, Peaseblossom and Cobweb) are currently hangin' in the 'hood, not the wood, causing their mischief in Compton. These urban fairies will be dressed in hip-hop attire and will rap their incantations."
