Tony Award and Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones will play the mayor’s wife in Adam Shankman’s upcoming adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, according to published reports. The film is scheduled to open in movie theaters on June 1, 2012.

The role, which has been specifically created for the film, is of a conservative woman who is against all things rock-and-roll.

As previously reported, Diego González Boneta will star as Drew; Tom Cruise will play Stacee Jaxx; 30 Rock star and Broadway veteran Alec Baldwin will play club owner Dennis; Paul Giamatti will play the manager of the rock band headed by Jaxx; former Dancing With the Stars pro Julianne Hough will play Sherrie; Grammy Award winner Mary J. Blige will play the role of Justice; and actor-comedian Russell Brand will play the role of Lonny.

The score includes the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more. The musical’s book is written by Chris D’Arenzio, who will also pen the screenplay with Michael Arndt and Alan Loeb.

Zeta-Jones won the Tony last year for her work as Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music and the Oscar for her role as Velma Kelly in the film version of Chicago.
