WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Yellow Face is a biting and funny new play about race and identity in America by Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang. He writes himself into the middle of his play, which is launched with the backstage revelations of an earlier play he wrote that flopped infamously on Broadway. It appears that a white actor was unknowingly cast in the role of an Asian, which is especially embarrassing for Hwang, who led the Asian American protest when a Welsh actor was cast as a Eurasian in the 1991 Broadway opening of Miss Saigon.
This hypocrisy is only the first twist in a wild satire that places familial politics alongside international intrigue. The result is a hilarious and provocative genre-bending play that will leave audiences pondering the value of racial identity versus cultural identity and issues of artistic and journalistic integrity.
