The Prisoner of Second Avenue, now being presented at the El Portal Theatre, could have been written yesterday. The middle class still feels like they're being snuffed out, unemployment has become the norm, and the common man is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
And thanks to fine performances by Jason Alexander and Gina Hecht, who bring realism and pain to the characters of Mel and Edna, Simon's black comedy of living and loving through a recession resonates even more strongly four decades later. Moreover, director Glenn Casale keeps the pace fast and furious, so that the beleaguered couple and their constant misadventures don't overstay their welcome.
