WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Art, science, commerce, love, reality and absurdity all collide in Steve Martin's brilliant and hilarious Picasso At The Lapin Agile.
Albert Einstein, brilliant theorist nearing the publication of his masterpiece The Special Theory of Relativity, and Pablo Picasso, womanizing artist moments away from the revolutionary Les Desmoiselles d'Avigon, sit down at a bar in Montmartre, France to discuss the coming of the 20th century.
Surrounded by workers, drinkers, lovers and one special guest from the future, they realize that both art and science define and are defined by beauty.
Witty, sharp and poignant, Martin addresses the passing of the century by looking into the hopeful eyes of two of its biggest influences. His play hilariously explore very serious questions about love and happiness and the meaning of life; they are rich with equal parts pain and slapstick humor, torment and wit. Picasso at the Lapin Agile, is Steve Martin's first full-length play, opened at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater before moving on to Los Angeles (where it was the longest-running show in the history of the Westwood Playhouse, now known as The Geffen) and, finally, to New York. An imagined meeting of Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in 1904 - when both men were in their twenties - it is a compelling examination of science and art and their impact on a rapidly changing society.
