WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Mary Zimmerman's mesmerizing METAMORPHOSES is a stunning exploration into the heart of Ovid's masterpiece featuring such mythical characters as Midas, Eros, Apollo and Phaeton. It is set in, on and around a beautifully reflective pool of water that represents everything from a stormy sea to an adulterous bed to a pool at the home of an over-privileged child. The actors wade, float, fight and even make love in this fluid set. The 90-minute journey mixes earthy humor with sudden tragedy.
Preview tickets are $25.00. April 11, 2000 is a "Pay-What-You-Can" performance.

The women were idealized and placed on pedestals (this was before women's lib), and the men were generally goofs--which, eventually, sort of dictated the manners and mores of Western culture.
Of course, the Gods were mythological. But Chicago writer-director Mary Zimmerman has adapted Ovid's version of their stories to make some comments on today's world. In its Mark Taper Forum incarnation, Metamorphoses is a bang-up evening of entertainment, although Zimmerman's goal is a little clouded by her approach.
