WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Joseph Conrad's celebrated novel Heart of Darkness is the story of Charlie Marlow, a sailor with a taste for adventure who uses his family ties to secure a position for himself as captain of a steamboat heading up the Congo River. His mission is to recover a cache of ivory from a renegade trader by the name of Kurtz. Along the way, Marlow discovers the futility, ineptitude and folly of Colonialism, and learns deep truths about the nature of light and the heart of darkness.
